When a wildebeest is born, it has about 1 hour to get ready to run with the herd and escape lions. It has to try and stand up as soon as possible. It falls down several times as it tries to stand up. Mother Wildebeest nudges it on with a sense of urgency; anytime the lions may show up. In less than an hour, the newborn wildebeest is strong enough to run for its life.

As human beings we take so long to prepare for life. We live our lives as if we are ready to die.

Surprisingly, most of us don’t have a plan for anything. We’ve not thought through our health, education, marriage, parenting, career, finances, retirement, etc.

Here are some baby wildebeest inspired actions you can take as you start this year.

  1. Put first things first: Relationship with God, marriage, family, health, personal finances, mental wellbeing. Prepare for life by having a plan in place.
  2. Take actions with a sense of urgency: As we age the window for taking some actions closes. We become weaker physically and mentally, responsibilities increase, and our risk appetite reduces. The same lion that chases the wildebeest is eaten alive by wild dogs when it grows old and weak.
  3.  Stay motivated: Physical things are not good motivators. It won’t take long before you realize that the car, phone, or house you thought you really needed are not necessary. Look for internal motivators like financial freedom, spiritual, leaving an inheritance for your children and a legacy, and social impact. The wildebeest is motivated by the need to survive.
  4. Get a cheer leader: Look for someone you trust and has your best interests at heart to keep you accountable and push you when things get difficult along the way.
  5. Join the herd: Your circle of friends should consist of people you share a mindset and values with.
